Prelab Brief
To study the external and internal structure of monocot (maize) and dicot (gram/bean) seeds through dissection.
๐
Theory
Dissect and explore the internal structure of monocot and dicot seeds. To study the external and internal structure of monocot (maize) and dicot (gram/bean) seeds through dissection.
โ
Formula
Principle: To study the external and internal structure of monocot (maize) and dicot (gram/bean) seeds through dissection.
๐ฏ
Aim
To study the external and internal structure of monocot (maize) and dicot (gram/bean) seeds through dissection.
๐งฐ
Apparatus
- Soaked gram seeds (dicot)
- Soaked maize seeds (monocot)
- Scalpel / Blade
- Magnifying glass
- Iodine solution
- Drawing sheet
๐งช
Procedure
- Soak seeds overnight in water.
- Observe external features: seed coat, hilum, micropyle.
- Carefully split the dicot seed โ identify two cotyledons, radicle, plumule.
- Cut the monocot seed longitudinally โ identify endosperm, single cotyledon (scutellum), coleoptile, coleorhiza.
- Apply iodine on endosperm โ blue-black confirms starch.
- Draw labelled diagrams of both types.
