Apparatus

  • Bar magnet
  • Iron filings
  • Compass needle
  • Straight conductor (wire)
  • Battery / DC power supply
  • Rheostat
  • Solenoid (coil)
  • Cardboard sheet

Procedure

  1. Place a bar magnet on a cardboard and sprinkle iron filings to observe field pattern.
  2. Move a compass needle around the magnet and note its alignment.
  3. Pass current through a straight conductor and observe concentric circular field lines.
  4. Reverse current direction and observe the change in field direction.
  5. Pass current through a solenoid and observe the field pattern similar to a bar magnet.
  6. Vary current strength and observe changes in field intensity.
