Formula
Principle: To study the physical and chemical properties of ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH), including its reaction with NaHCO₃, NaOH, and alcohol (esterification).
🎯
Aim
To study the physical and chemical properties of ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH), including its reaction with NaHCO₃, NaOH, and alcohol (esterification).
🧰
Apparatus
- Test tubes
- Bunsen burner
- Ethanoic acid (glacial acetic acid)
- NaHCO₃ solution
- NaOH solution
- Ethanol
- Conc. H₂SO₄ (catalyst)
- Litmus paper
🧪
Procedure
- Test smell and solubility of ethanoic acid in water.
- Add ethanoic acid to NaHCO₃ solution — observe effervescence (CO₂).
- Add ethanoic acid to NaOH — neutralization reaction.
- Mix ethanoic acid + ethanol + few drops conc. H₂SO₄ — warm gently.
- A fruity smell indicates ester (ethyl ethanoate) formation.
