Microorganisms – Bread Mold Growth Experiment

Simulate fungal growth (Rhizopus) on bread over time under different environmental conditions.

Biology Class 6-8 Microorganisms Beginner
Prelab Brief
To observe the growth of bread mold (fungus) under different conditions of moisture and temperature, and conclude the optimal environment for fungal growth.
📘

Theory

Simulate fungal growth (Rhizopus) on bread over time under different environmental conditions. To observe the growth of bread mold (fungus) under different conditions of moisture and temperature, and conclude the optimal environment for fungal growth.

Formula

Principle: To observe the growth of bread mold (fungus) under different conditions of moisture and temperature, and conclude the optimal environment for fungal growth.

🎯

Aim

To observe the growth of bread mold (fungus) under different conditions of moisture and temperature, and conclude the optimal environment for fungal growth.

🧰

Apparatus

  • Fresh bread slices
  • Sealable clear plastic bags or petri dishes
  • Water sprayer
  • Magnifying glass or microscope
  • Warm, dark cupboard
  • Refrigerator
  • Dry environment
🧪

Procedure

  1. Select the type of bread condition (Dry or Moistened with water).
  2. Choose the environmental condition: Warm/Dark, Room Temperature, or Cold (Fridge).
  3. Place the bread slice inside a simulated container and seal it.
  4. Advance the time day by day (Day 1 to 5+) to observe visible changes.
  5. Compare the growth rate across different setups to identify the optimal condition.
  6. Use the microscope view to observe fungal hyphae and sporangia.
